Bec hurried tokeep up with Doug and Sam.Sam glanced at her.Shelooked really worried."Keith and I could both lose our jobsover this. The hospital lab isn't supposed to test anyonewithout a doctor's order."Sam frowned."I thought you said this guy would doit." He didn't slow, seeming to find his way through themaze of the hospital with surprising ease for a guy with nomemory. He paused at an intersection, glancing down thehallways before choosing one."He will. That's not my point. We aren't backing outon you.I'm just suggesting you should think about therisk." Bec sighed, and Sam realized she understood thefutility of her argument but felt compelled to make itanyhow. He felt bad for taking advantage of Doug's friend, but worry over what had been done to him outweighed hisreluctance to exploit any advantage."I'm thinking about the risk.Sam could die fromwhatever they were doing to him." Doug's words reassuredSam.They were doing the right thing. He slowed and cameto a stop outside a door with a simple sign under the smallglass window."Phlebotomy."78Broken Memories Diane Adams & RJ Scott"Come on; I'm not staying.I have to get back to myfloor." She swiped her badge over the small blinking lightbeside the door and tugged it open when it clicked.GivingSam a brief smile, she held it open for them. The scent ofarousal filled the air behind him.Frowning, Sam turned tosee a look on Bec's face that meant one thing, and Douglooking uncomfortable.Bec was petite, cute, and busty.Doug's attraction to her was understandable, but Samwasn't a sharing kind of guy and took a step towards them."Sorry, Bec." Doug shook his head."I have to find adifferent way to pay you back."Bec tilted her head, obviously scenting the airaround him.A fine brow arched high on her forehead."It'slike that?" She sounded surprised.Doug shrugged."Until I figure it out, it is like this.I'm sorry." Sam moved to his side, not quite touching him, simply lending support.Bec glanced between them."Can't say I saw thiscoming.Hard to believe someone caught Doug.I neverimagined you tied down but I guess Jamie was right.Youreally were out there doing all the nosing around lookingfor something." She took a deep breath."Imprinted, butsomething's different. You're different. What's going on?""I don't know, Bec, and it's the honest truth.I'll letyou in on it if we figure it out.I'll pay you back somehow."79Broken Memories Diane Adams & RJ Scott"If you come back and tell me what the hell is goingon, we'll call it even."Doug grinned at her offer."You got it, babe," hepromised. She stretched up and pressed a kiss to his cheek.Eyes narrowed, Sam jostled between them with a lowgrowl.Bec giggled."Down, boy, just friends." As if toprove her words, she kissed Sam's cheek too."Keith's in thesecond room on the right. He's expecting you." She paused, her compassionate eyes searching Sam's face."I hopeyou're okay." Bec slipped out the door, leaving Sam andDoug alone in the short hallway that led to the open lab.Heavy wooden doors led into other rooms, two oneach side of the hallway. They shared a look of trepidationbefore heading down the hall.Sam pushed the door open, but Doug went in first, scenting the air and alert for trouble.Sam let the door swing shut behind him.The inside of theroom was set out as a small office rather than a lab, thesterile medicinal smell somewhat less than it had been inthe hallway.Sam breathed in the scents of paper, electronics, and another wolf gratefully. The man behind the desk rose to greet them, a tensesmile on his face.Thirtyish, he looked tired and worried.Sam saw his name on the papers spread over the desk andrealized the wolf was reviewing his case.80Broken Memories Diane Adams & RJ Scott"Keith Lambert." He held out his hand, and Samshook it, reassured by the strong confident grip."I'm Doug, and this is Sam." Doug then took a stepback, laying a reassuring hand on Sam's shoulder."Can weget this over with? I'm not sure being in the hospital is safefor Sam.""I'm quite sure it's not.You understand this willhave to be reported to the authorities." Keith's tonesuggested he wasn't open to any other outcome.Sam feltpanic begin to nibble at the edge of his reason.Dougsqueezed his shoulder reassuringly
